nogales cortinez-calles dental district

The Cortinez-Calles dentistry district in Nogales, Mexico bears the names of the two streets that border the zone – Avenidas Ruiz Cortinez and Plutarco Elias Calles. The district is directly across the border from the Morley Avenue pedestrian crossing. It is also accessible on foot from the main border tourism district, either by crossing over the lanes of cross-border traffic on the pedestrian overpass, or by crossing the border traffic via a crosswalk.

The area is perhaps best known for the Mexican restaurant located near the south end of Avenida Plutarco Elias Calles, the restaurant-bar La Roca El Balcon. La Roca has been a mainstay in Nogales for decades, and is one of the more popular places to stop for a bite or a cold beverage in Nogales, Mexico.

The Cortinez-Calles area has gone through some transitions in years past, and is currently in a positive development mode. The area was originally made famous by La Roca and another well-known Nogales business, The Cavern (La Caverna) an internationally known restaurant and night club located steps south of the border on Plutarco Elias Calles. Unfortunately, the Cavern was destroyed in a fire in 1986 and was never rebuilt.

After that time, parts of the area went into decay, dominated by border strip clubs. However, the Cortinez-Calles area is currently undergoing something of a renovation, with new first-rate professional dental offices entering the area, with more construction of professional services offices underway.

There are two ways to get to the Cortinez-Calles district. The first is to cross at the Morley Gate pedestrian border crossing, located at the south end of Morley Street in Nogales. There is metered on-street parking on Morley, just be sure to allow for plenty of time on the meter in case there is a long line when you come back across the border.

You can also park in one of the border parking lots and take the steps to the second floor of the DeConcini border station, continue east along the second-floor outside balcony, over the catwalk that crosses over the trains, and down the steps to the other side. Once at ground level you will see the Morley crossing just ahead.

Once you cross through the border crossing, you will be at the intersection of Cortinez and Calles. Plutarco Calles is the street that does straight south, and Cortinez passes to your right.

The second way to get to Cortinez-Calles is to walk there from the main tourism district south of the DeConcini Port of Entry. After you pass through Plaza Pesquiera, carefully cross the streets to get to the small plaza next to the pedestrian overpass.

From there, to get to Avenida Cortinez you can either walk over the pedestrian overpass or (again, carefully) take the crosswalk across the northbound lanes of vehicular traffic that are queuing up to cross the border, and cross over the railroad tracks.

To then get to Avenida Elias Calles, you will see the south end of the street to your right, there is a business called Soluciones Laborales on the corner. Follow the street and you will see the sign for La Roca el Balcon.
